DTF Pressing Guide: Temperature, Time, and Pressure
Share
You have your DTF transfers. Now it is time to press them. The good news: DTF is forgiving, and a few simple settings give you a clean, professional result. This is the recipe we recommend as a starting point.
Our recommended settings
- Temperature: 320°F (160°C)
- Pressure: medium
- Press time: 20 seconds
- Wait before peeling: about 1 minute
- Final press: 15 seconds at the same temperature
These are starting points. Presses, garments and fabrics vary, so always test on a spare piece first.
Step by step
- Prep your garment. You do not need to pre-press or pre-iron. Lay the garment flat and smooth. You can pre-press if you prefer.
- Position your design. Place the transfer where you want it, with the film side up, and make sure it lies flat. Use heat-resistant tape to hold it in place if needed.
- Press. Cover the design with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper. Press at 320°F with medium pressure for 20 seconds.
- Wait, then peel. Let it sit for about 1 minute, then peel the film in one smooth, steady motion.
- Final press. Cover the design again with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper and press for 15 seconds at the same temperature. This gives a softer, more matte finish.
Why temperature, time and pressure matter
Each setting does a different job. Heat activates the adhesive, time lets it bond with the fabric, and pressure presses the design into the fibers. If one is off, the others have to make up for it.
Troubleshooting
- Part of the design did not stick: lay the film back down and press again with a little more pressure, or raise the heat in small steps of about 10°F (5°C).
- The garment looks scorched or marked: reduce the pressure first. If that is not enough, keep the lower pressure and drop the heat by 10 to 15°F.
- The design looks shiny: do the final press with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper for a more matte finish.
With a little practice you will find the sweet spot for each garment and material.
Washing and care
- Turn the garment inside out.
- Wash cold.
- Tumble dry on low or hang dry.
- Do not use bleach.
- Do not iron directly over the design.
